Harrises to Receive Foundation Award

McCook Community Foundation's annual Founders celebration will include the first presentation of a new, special award. John T. and Eleanor Harris will receive The Benefactor award on Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Bieroc Cafe in McCook.
"Three local non-profits also will receive funding gifts from McCook Community Foundation," according to board chairman Gene Morris.
Accompanying the award is a bronzed bison on a wooden panel, atop a marble platform, created by local sculptor Gary Ginther. "We are thrilled to have someone of Gary's talent create this noteworthy and beautiful award," board member Cheri Beckenauer said. Ginther, who is working on a 10-foot bison sculpture for Ted Turner, is a 1965 graduate of McCook High School and also created and sculpted the bison located on the lawn of Carneige Library in McCook.
John T. and Eleanor Harris are long-time residents of McCook and Opelika, Ala.
"This dedicated couple has supported the McCook Community Foundation at its inception and several of the group funds," according to the nomination. "John T. and Eleanor have distinguished themselves as leaders in the history of McCook. Eleanor was born in McCook and was a member of the second graduating class at McCook Junior College. All of the Harris boys began their college experience there. Mrs. Harris was deeply involved in the creation of High Plains museum, actually moving artifacts through five different locations.
"John T. was the first chairman of the McCook United Way, Chairman of the George W. Norris Memorial Committee, President of the McCook YMCA, and served in numerous leadership roles for the community. He played a significant role in creating the airport. Their sons and grandchildren have followed in their footsteps, working to make McCook and Nebraska a wonderful place to live and raise children," according to the nomination.
The evening activities will begin with a wine tasting by Finocchiaro Wine Co., presented by Dick Hoffman, followed by a prime rib or salmon dinner served by The Bieroc Café.
Entertainment will be provided by a talented 13-year old, Brandenn Bremmer, who is an accomplished pianist studying at Colorado State University.
Brandenn started playing piano at age three and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln through its distance learning programs at age 10.
Tickets are available for $30 a person by contacting Denise Ringenberg at McCook Community Foundation, (308) 345-5188.
