Bernard and Nelda Haag Scholarship Recipients
The Haag scholarship is based on applicants extracurricular activities, leadership, work/volunteer experience, personal essay and financial need. Residents in the counties of Red Willow, Furnas, Frontier, Hayes and Hitchcock can apply if they are starting college or currently enrolled in an accredited school of higher education.
2008
- Shalee Roundtree - Dundy County-Stratton High School
Shalee was named the 2006 Outstanding 4-H member in Dundy County and has twice earned the livestock Grand Champion Showmanship award. She also earned Grand Championship honors for the past six years in 4-H speech. As an active member of Future Farmers of America, Shalee has qualified for state livestock judging throughout her high school career. She was named Outstanding FFA member for two of those years and was a State Degree Recipient in 2008.
Shalee’s other high school honors include Who’s Who Among American High School Students, The National Society of High School Scholars and a place on the honor roll. Shalee enjoys working on the family farm, Roundtree Cattle LLC, and being a life-guard at the city pool in Benkelman.
Shalee will attend the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture to study ag business. She plans to come back to Southwest Nebraska after college and work for a local newspaper.
2007 - Dylan Ruppert, McCook High School
Dylan was named the Outstanding 4-H member in Red Willow County and serves as youth representative on the 4-H Council. He won the prestigious Premier Horse Exhibitor Award at Aksarben competing against 4-Hers from several states. Dylan has successfully shown horses on a statewide level and was part of the third place Hippology team at the State Horse Expo. He has also shown cattle through 12 years of 4-H, served in Junior Leaders and helped new 4-Hers with their livestock projects.
Through Bit n’Spur 4-H Club, Dylan organized a benefit horse show fun days for the Domestic Abuse Center and for an injured 4-H Club member. Dylan also has his own cow herd while working for his parents, David and Darla Ruppert. They operate the Rocking Heart Stock ranch north of McCook.
Dylan will attend Colby Community College to study beef management and ag business. After college he plans to come back into the family farm/ranch and rebuild his grandfather’s place that has been in his family for 109 years.
2006 - Kyle Quaduor, Southwest High School
Kyle has been involved in numerous activities, including: Class C All-State
Band, Football team captain, FFA officer, Boys State Representative, National
Honor Society, Homecoming King, Outstanding 4-Her for Red Willow County, and
Speech/Drama letterman. He has volunteered to play Taps at Veterans funerals and
Memorial Day ceremonies. Once a month he helps with Saturday Morning 4-H,
besides working on the family farm and performing custom welding and repair work
for area farmers.
Kyle was the first recipient of the Bernard and Nelda Haag Scholarship.
Kyle's plans included attending McCook Community College to study welding and machine shop technology and to operate his own machine shop in the future. His parents are Robert and Kathleen Quaduor. They live on the family farm northeast of Danbury.
